Climate Change Climate change means the Earth is getting warmer and the weather is changing. People burn fuels like coal, oil, and gas. This makes a gas called carbon dioxide (CO₂). This gas goes into the air. CO₂ traps heat from the sun, like a big blanket around the Earth. This blanket makes the planet warmer over time. Ice near the poles melts, and sea levels rise, which can flood some places. Storms and extreme weather can be stronger and more dangerous. Animals and plants may have a hard time finding food or homes. People might lose farms or houses if floods and storms happen more often. Many people may have to move to safer places, and crops may not grow well in hot or dry weather. Climate change also affects our health. Hotter days can cause heat strokes, and dirty air from pollution can make breathing problems worse. Forest fires can spread more easily in dry weather, destroying trees and animal habitats.
